I have a friend that wants me to build him a PC just for audio ripping and encoding to MP3.
He will be using Exact Audio Copy with a LAME plug in.

He is looking to get the fastest PC to do this however he doesn't want to waste a lot of money on it. He recently closed his 5 record stores and is going to rip a ton of CDs to MP3 before he sells them all off on Ebay so speed is important.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Before you suggest it I know he doesn't need something like a i7 even though it might be the fastest.

An i5 4430/4440/4570 and a B85 pro4 would be my pick. Those 3 cpus tend to bounce around on price, so whichever one seems like the best deal, go with that.

You could go Xeon 1230v3, but would need a dedicated GPU, though any PCI-E gpu would work, that is compatible with the OS. The extra cache would probably speed things up a bit. It really just depends on budget.

what software is he using? Back in the day I use to use real jukebox to rip cd's on an old P4, from the time you put in the disc till finish was 5-10min since I had to go out to the internet and find the album art and tracks and that would even put it in mp3 format.

I would think on the cheap side an i3 would do it fine an i5 would be perfect, but I think your limiting speed is going to be the read and write of the cd/dvd drive its self.

I know that the speed of the CD/DVD drive effects a portion of the process however I know encoding takes a while.
When I had an Athlon 2 and moved up to a Phenom II the encoding speed seemed to be 50% faster. I am guessing since Intel has the best single thread performance Intel may be the way to go. With LAME only being a single thread ap I am not sure if an i5 would be much of an improvement but then again I could be wrong. It's been 10 years since I have done an Intel build.
