I am a new user of Linux. I decided to update my driver because my system (HP Pavilion Dv9646eg) was freezing after wake up on the login window. I followed instructions from the internet. One of which wanted me to type sudo apt-get remove nvidia*. As soon as the Nvidia driver got deleted. My system froze. I turned it off using the power button and now it cannot display anything not even the HP logo that appear when the system powers on. Any help would be appreciated.

The command sudo apt-get remove only affects what's installed in Ubuntu and will have no effect whatsoever on your HP logo on startup. It's sounds to me more like a display problem. Have you tried connecting an external screen? Does it cycle through the boot, ie the fan runs the dvd checks for a disk, buttons flash you get the picture. Can you boot from a live ubuntu DVD? Can you get into the BIOS and see if you can disable nvidia and go with only the Intel video?
