I am working on a Win 7 laptop and am experiencing lagging and eventual freezing. I'll turn on the computer and log in and everything seems to be back to normal then the lagging hits. My mouse will hardly move and then everything totally freezes. The only way to get out is to do a hard restart of the machine. This is not connected to opening a specific program and it happens at random. I am connected to a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server and am using Active Directory to connect the laptop to my server. I am not experiencing this on any of our other workstations so that is probably not a factor but I wanted to mention it in case anyone had experienced the same thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A friend had a laptop like this. Turned out the power header for his CPU cooler fan was dead and the fan was not spinning to cool the CPU. Your problem doesn't sound like that exactly, but it couldn't hurt to check. Might be that the fan is intermittently under-performing on its way to dying.
