Is my 1GB VRAM holding me back?

Hey everyone,

Almost a year ago I built my system and used an FX 8350 and an XFX Radeon 7850 with 1GB of VRAM. I've been talking to friends and looking it up that with this I should be getting a decent FPS in intensive games. Since then I've played both Call of Duty: Ghosts and Far Cry 3. Whenever I try put it on High+ settings I get low FPS, and in Ghosts, on any settings but recommended (Low) I get random black streaks through my screen, sometimes covering my whole screen. The higher OR lower I put it I get the black streaks, and if I raise it I get semi-unplayable FPS. All of this immediately made me think of my 1GB VRAM that I have, and thought that'd be the cause of it. Is it? Any help is appreciated.

It's easy to test. Lower your AA and AF down all the way. Now bring them back up one notch at a time. FPS should slowly decrease as you raise, but when it takes a nosedive you know you have reached your VRAM limit. The solution: Use less AA/AF. Also overclocking your VRAM helps raise the bandwidth.

The problem you describe sounds like a physical problem with the gpu. Try blowing it out and leaving the side open.

only aa push vram usage in 1080p above 1 gb, and even at vram shortage it barely noticeable. think tek syndicate or pcper did a test on it.

Depends on the game. I have a few that max'd out my crossfire HD 6850 1GB of RAM when only going to 4x MSAA.

Thanks a lot, I tried it in both Far Cry 3 and Ghosts, and it seems to be much smoother now :D  Plus, no annoying black streaks going through my screen. :)
