So a friend of mine built a new computer and used the hard drive from his old alienware to save money. This apparently caused the Windows 7 on it to become counterfeit and ever since he's had issues with various things throughout the system. Now the computer will boot up and load to just before the log in menu, but it just goes black and does nothing with the curser just sitting there. Is there compatibility issues here? Does he have to wipe the hard drive somehow and install a new copy of windows? Im lost

You need an install disk. You can download windows7 and win pro but you will need an activation key to activate the software. What was the key of the older comp. There is a chance that it will work and you might have to call the activation phone number that will pop up on your screen and then input some numbers that a comp voice gives you over the phone.

So how do we clean install it if we can't even get to the log in screen?
