Hello,

I have a question about boosting the speed and range of my home wireless wifi signal.

I have just moved moved to the downstairs part of my house and have noticed a drop in the speed of the wifi since. My knowledge of routers, modems etc is very minimal however I have read the sticky **how to ask for help** thread, I will post my info below:

- 2013 Macbook Air
- Linksys WRT160N router
- Motorola SB5100 SURFboard cable modem
- Wifi (is this the connection type?)
- (Cant figure out how to find ISP)
- One connected desktop PC, one old laptop (hardly used), 2 wireless smartphones, and this mac connected to the network.

Now I understand that the Motorola modem is pretty old, but would updating that really help my problem? What are my options for installing a new piece of hardware downstairs to boost my signal? I'm pretty sure there is a phone line down here if that helps..

Cheers

The weaker the signal, the less the data speed.

When you moved, you probably put extra doors, walls and floors between you and your macbook.

Can you move the router closer top where you use the macbook?

Or get a better modem/router to replace both the modem and router eg Netgear DGN 3700. Both your modem and router aren't very good

Or you can add range extenders eg http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=200_634

You mean extras doors, walls etc between the macbook and the router?

I don't really have the option of moving the router closer as it is in position in an office upstairs.

I did a tiny bit of research a read that updating the modem/router may not even provide a highly noticeable difference?

These range extenders are more of what I was thinking, are they reliable and actually produce results?

Thanks

--EDIT--

Turns out I only have a phone cable connected downstairs, meaning I wont be able to connect a new piece of hardware down here? Should I look at upgrading the Linksys WRT160N to a Linksys WRT320N? Will upgrading the modem do anything?
