I am using an exFat formatted 1TB WD My Passport to store back ups of my movies. One day when I was copying a file into it it froze so I had to restart my Windows 7 Home Premium laptop. After rebooting the laptop it is detecting the drive as dirty. I tried running CHKDSK on it but after 3 days it is still not finished and it times out. It did detect some bad sectors on the drive. After several attempts at CHKDSK I decided to reformat the drive.

After reformatting, copying files, deleting files and creating folders on the drive is really slow. I decided to do a clean all for the drive but after a few hours it said that it could not complete due to an I/O error. When I went to Disk Management it asked me to format the drive so I created a simple volume and reformatted as exFat but still copying was slow. I set the policy to Better Performance and I can now create folders fast but when I am copying a large file at first it goes fast then it slows down to a point where it seems like its frozen. Also when I try to reformat the drive again, I lost the option to reformat it as exFat.

Any ideas on what else I can do?
