Please be patient with me since this is my first post.
I have Dell 2900 with the following specifications:
2x Intel Xeon CPU 5130@ 2.00Ghz
RAM 12.0 GB
OS Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1
2x WD 320gb running a RAID 1
3x WD Green 3TB no RAID
1x WD 500GB no RAID

So here is the problem I keep facing every here and their making it very annoying because of the consumption of time it takes to retrieve all the data. I run this beast in my house as a media server. We use PLEX and the BOXEE to connect to the server. I'm the only one that handles the server. I can't seem to point the exact time when this happens but it's has happen 3 times in the last 4 years where one of the TB drive will get corrupted and I lose everything on that drive. i can't seem to point what corrupts the drive. I use the 500GB drive to encode my movies and download the ones that are older and can't seem to find on Blu-Ray. 95% of my movies are encoded to .MKV, the rest in .avi or mp4. After the movie are set I transfer it to the correct drive. In a previous instance it seem logic to me to do all my decoding on a separate drive. The RAID 1 drives run only the OS and any software needed.

Each drive has a serious of categories i.e one of the TB will hold kids movies, kids TV shows, and anything related to kids viewing. I have used multiple software to retrieve the data to have somewhat a bit of luck, however, I end up having to find all the movies and added them to the server again. This just happened to one of my drives it was a 2.2GB full when it gave out.

People have suggested to go with a RAID but i want to maximize my drives to upload as much moves as I can, however, if this keeps up I have to lose storage for a RAID.

Someone suggested going from windows to ubuntu but i have no idea how to use it. Last time I installed ubuntu on the server, I couldn't get the hard drives mounted keep getting an error message so I went back to windows.

Need any suggestions on what i should do. If i have to sacrifice storage for a RAID in order not to lose the movies again I will do it. However, if anybody has another suggestion let me know. I can add another 2x 3TB drives and if I by a small cage to the server can add an additional 2 drives for a total of 4 extra drives.

What is "one of the TB drive"?

1. Back up the data from the faulty drive if you can.
2. Do a checkdisk on the drive, and if that doesn't cure it
3. Download and use Seatools (or maybe there's a WD equivalent) to check the hdd.
4. Replace the drive if its not 100% OK

Thank you for your response. Each drive has a serious of different movie categories. What I mean by that is one out of the 3x 3TB will be movies for kids another drive for movies and shows 17 and up and the last drive for songs and videos.

I can retrieve most of the information but i what i need is a solution for it not to happen again.

Again thank you for your response.
