Question: Why is closed loop liquid cooling so popular?

I've been browsing the pcparkpicker's completed builds and most of then include a closed looped watercooler. Isn't air cooling a cheaper and for the most part, a better, quieter solution? Most if not all of the people I asked suggest air cooling and to only go for water cooling if going custom. So, why is it that most people (at least on the site) choose the closed loop liquid cooling options rather than air?

Solution
For me, (in a system that's not a custom loop), I prefer closed loop over air. Many don't as you said. My reasons are 100% aesthetics. With a side window, I love the look of the liquid cooling pump over the cpu as opposed to a big bulky air cooler. There are some decent looking ones of course.

So in my case, it's just personal preference. I fully understand the argument for big air coolers. They are generally quieter and perform just as well for usually less cost.

Cheaper yes, better & quieter? not really. Water can transfer heat faster than air, which will give better temps. People use closed loop liquid coolers because making a custom loop is just too much work and the performance difference between closed loop and custom is not very significant.

Ya, I was thinking about going liquid cooling, but cleaning the radiator and possible hassle of leaking just seems too much for me personally. So, the main appeal of closed liquid cooling (anything less than 240mm) is the aesthetics; like buying a cooler master v8 gts.
