So i wanted to buy as the title says a vapor-x r9 280x card which uses 2x8 pin pci-e power connectors but my psu only has 2x6 pin pci-e connectors
my psu is Silver power SP-600A2C, a 600W psu which by itself should be sufficient.
problem is with those 2 12V rails (22 amps each) with 6 pin pci-e connectors... can i use 6 to 8 pin adapter cabling on both - imo it should work since i read about 6 pin connectors giving out much more than 75W as labeled

im planning to use only 1 card, so no crossfire on this build or in the near future

EDIT: thx for previous answers, yeah, i know my psu is a bit older
i would also add that i have amd athlon II processor x4 640 - i doubt i will need better one in the near future and im not planning to overclock my system at all since im an average gamer; just wanted to have gpu that wount be total crap after 2 yrs

what about r9 270 or r9 270x gpu? would that work?

The power supply is too old to have today's standard pcie connectors. Get a new power supply. You need 30A on the 12V rail and 550W minimum. Get a good reliable psu from Tier One - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su... eg Antec HCG 520M

With a 125W processor and this graphics card, each +12V rail would be at 80% load if they were perfectly balanced.
I wouldn't take a chance on this. You are better off with a more modern single+12V rail design rated at least 44A on the +12V rail, but preferably a higher.
Some suggestions:
Seasonic G 650
Corsair TX 650
