Grateful for your advice on (i) I use my computer mostly on photo editing (photoship CS5), a little bid gaming, which should I choose, AMD or nVidia? Which card will you recommend given my budget is around US130. (ii) Should I buy 2gD5 or 1gD5? I am using one 24" monitor.

yes it will help but your system memory also plays a big part in this , for $130 it is a hard call
