Can I switch my CPU? I have a Laptop.

I have a laptop and I want to upgrade the cpu but I really don't know if I can. On my computers website my micro processor says the following: 1.9GHz up to 2.8GHz AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated Processor.

Now it says up to 2.8 Ghz but my computer only has 2.30. Does that mean the maximum cpu I can put in is 2.8 or does that mean something else?

Solution
It means it can be configured with different CPUs from 1.9 GHz up to 2.8 GHz from the factory.

On laptops I would not encourage the user to change out CPUs. It is very delicate work and unless you do this on a daily basis it is very likely that some component or ZIF connector will be damaged.

So you mean I could get a Cpu that of 2.8 ghz and put it in? (Risks aside)
Problem is you say this is dangerous. Could I ask a professional to have it put in for me?

Yes the 2.8 GHz CPU can be installed professionally. I have opened laptops and interchanged the keyboard and the RAM module under the keyboard, and I see how compact the components are. The ZIF connectors are very delicate and the plastic is subjected to aging effects. This makes some components brittle. That is why I discourage people from doing this. Yes, it can be done!

2.3 GHz is fast and you will not see a great performance increase by going to 2.8 GHz. One way of making the laptop perform better is to upgrade the RAM. Look at the specs of the laptop motherboard and see what the highest MHz RAM it will support. This is worth looking into.

YAY! Wait.... Does it have to be certain kind of cpu or can it just be anything in the range of 1.9-2.8?

I am going to Tiger Direct today to get 16 gb of ram. My computers specs say there are two ram ports user accessible so I am going to get two 8 gb ram sticks... Wait that would leave me with 1 ram stick... Perhaps I could sell the other?
My current amount of ram is 8. So I am going to dethrone that number with 16 gb. My specs for ram related things say the following: 8GB DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM) Also where do I look for the highest supported MHz?
My hardrive says the following: 750GB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

Just make sure that the laptop motherboard supports 16 GBs. The motherboard specs should state this.

Where do I find the motherboard specs?

My memory specs say this: 8GB DDR3 SDRAM (2 DIMM) There are two ports user accessible.

That means you can install two memory modules each 4 GBs for a total of 8 GBs. DDR3.

Also check the frequency and go with the highest frequency supported.

Does that mean I can't get 16 gb?

Correct! The max RAM possible is 8 GBs, and that too two modules of 4 GBs each; not one 8 GB module. This laptop does not support 16 GBs.

That sucks... Well since I could get a cpu switch could I do that? I play games such as NS2. Such a game needs 2.6 Ghz. And thats the minimum. The preferable is 3.00. I dont have the minimum of the ghz or the graphics card. I think the ghz may help with not only NS2 but a few other games I have. Is there desktop cpu's and laptop cpu's? Would this cpu work for me: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6620918&CatId=2326
Now it is a I have a L2 Cache with 4MB so as you could tell that one really lacks but it does have 2.80 ghz.

It looks good for the price. One weak point may be the generic PSU that these types of kits have. You may have to upgrade the PSU to a good Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Antec. (The kit you are looking at may have an Ultra brand PSU; not very good).

Ok then. Maybe I should just buy a moderately priced desktop and just go from there with all the complicated upgrades.
