I am looking into building a pc, but I don't know what direction to go and I would appreciate some input. I am planning on using it as a "server" for games such as minecraft. I am unsure as to the differences between a server and a standard pc. Also I am not sure what is more economical at this time. So any advise and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you plan on installing it in a data centre, a desktop PC is fine and less expensive. Any PC can be used as a server, but real server hardware may be more reliable, but there are exceptions. I have 2 desktops used as servers running 24x7 and they are stable (not overclocked to achieve optimal stibility).
Hello... here is site with with a good many types of Server/Rack mount http://www.plinkusa.net/ the number of hardrives and Video card will dicate your case and PS size... But there are option for most any CPU/MB and Ram needs in a very small case...MB sizes ITX ATX uATX will be what to look for to fit in a case... The Standard PS size wil be ATX mounting for alot of Low cost options in Desktop and Tower cases.
Are you Planning to do remote site events?
