You should have your HDD and SDD's in good conditions, though they don't need as much cooling as lets say, a CPU, they still need to be regulated to assure that they do not fail. Keeping them in a bad position with converters and bad temperatures can severely reduce the life-span and possibly reduce the performance of your HDD/SSD.

Also, the chance of them failing is more. Most people don't need the optical drive anyway now and days, but it's nice to have.
