I just learned that my power supply only provides 40Amps on the 12V and my Graphics card requires at least 42Amps! I picked up my computer about 25 days ago, is there any chance I could return it for a different unit? I've been having some trouble and now I know why. Is it safe to run the msi Gtx 770 twin frozr oc at stock clocks on the PSU (Antec HCG 750W), or am I setting myself up for disaster?

Just replace the PSU. It is safe to run it, but the performance will not be too good and you will have a lot of hiccups. Don't think you want that kind of aggravation.

I don't have that kind of money! I just bought it for $120 on sale and I don't just want to throw it away. Is there any chance of replacing it?

Wait a second that power supply has 2 - 40 amp 12 volt rails and is way more than enough for a GTX 770.

You are all set with that power supply.

Depends where you bought it, many electronics re/e-tailers have a 30 day return policy

It depends upon where you bought it from. Newegg & Amazon for example have a30 day return policy. They would be more inclined to accept a return if you purchase the replacement from them.

40amps on 12volts = 504watts. You're fine as long as that's not some sort of dual card. That psu has two rails, just make sure you're not using the same rail as the CPU uses (check the manual) and you'll be fine. (they probably mean 42amps if it's being shared by the cpu)

I suppose (some one correct me if I'm wrong) you could always plug in the 8pin pcie connecter from one rail, and the 6pin pcie connector from the second.

I'm currently using a single cord plugged into the 12V1 slot (it splits into two PCIe connectors) is this ok?

Yes that is fine.

You have plenty of power it has 2 rails of 40 amps.

OK. I had a Card that required a minimum of 18a on the rail. My PSU had exactly 18a on the rail. Okay, no problem. Well, so I thought. Did fine then I was gaing and got to a very intensive part in the game and things started going bad. The card was a good one and well above what the game required. I cut back on the settings some which helped, but I knew I should be playing at higher settings. After some thought, I decided that al though my PSU met mnimum requirements for the card, it wasn't supplying enough for the more intensive parts. Bought a new PSU with 42a on the rail and never had another moments problems. Now having said that, if your card says it requires a minimum of 42a on the rail and you have 40a, if you think you have plenty, then fine, but you are not going to be happy. I speak from personal experience and not from some theoretical stuff on paper, that may or may not work in practice. You can get a Corsair 650wTX which has 42a on the rail, but you have no headroom, which is desirable. There are some very good PSU's out ther in your $120 budget range. This is a good one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

First off I guess I forgot to mention my PSU has 750watts.

Sorry I don't know if you checked the rest of the forum, but my psu actually has 62 amps, I didn't know that if you had multiple rails then you have to add them up. I have two 12v 40 amp rails, and if you do the math (744w/12v = 62Amps). Also I'm pretty sure 42 is the required amperage for the whole system, so I have more then enough to power the graphics card and the rest of my computer. I now know that my psu is called "High Current Gamer" for a reason.
