I am helping a friend build his PC and his PC doesn't read his HDD when his SSD is plugged in and vice versa What could be causing this?

Numerous causes.

Is the hdd plugged in - to sata power from the psu and sata data from the mobo?

Have you set the ssd as the primary boot drive in bios? Do both show up in bios?
