hello I have always been wondering if the actually act of overclocking automatically decreases the lifespan of a cpu/gpu or is it just the exrta heat generated considered to be the cause for the decreased lifespan.

Solution
The extra voltage and running it at unstable speeds also increases electron migration, which damages it over time.

However, CPUs fail pretty rarely, and generally due to overheating.
