If you are playing @ 60Hz I would go with r9 290 since it is by far the cheapest card and can play pretty much all games stable at 60Hz+

R9 290, GTX 780, or even a GTX 770 if you overclock.a gtx 770 cant even play games at 60fps today at ultra settings...it will be dead in 2 months
Uh... no, it can run games like Far Cry 3 at 80 FPS and is basically 5FPS below the 780...
crysis 3 runs at around 40fps

I have just ordered an EVGA GTX 780 ti Classified and I too game at 1920 x 1080, and despite this being overkill or not considering the resolution, I am hoping that the upgrade will keep me nearer for the most part to that of the 100fps on ultra settings I am looking for, depending on the game of course!! Good luck with what ever choice you make!!

Oh come on! You need a 780 Ti (over double the cost) to get near to 60FPS!

I would get the reference 780 ti and overclock if needed however in most cases it will be overkill.
The gtx 780 would give you an excellent experience at 1080 however if you game at 120 hz or if you want to stay close to 60 fps with AC4 maxed out with PhysX enabled and avoid drops the 780 ti will be better.

The 780 ti significantly faster than the 780 and overclocks better,

dpassenger97 was exaggerating however there are many games the 770 can't play on ultra and get a solid sixty especially if AA is included in the picture.
For testing purposes I lowered my resolution to 1080p and maxed out crisis with 8x msaa with my 780 ti overclocked.
Most of the time I was getting over 50 fps however I had some drops to the mid forties.
The 780 would do significantly worse in this test and the 770 couldn't handle this setting.

Price to performance, sure you can pay £200 more for your 10FPS, me? I'd prefer to buy an i7 instead

Why do you need a i7?
Do you do a lot of video editing?
There are some games that utilize more threads and I think future games will also benefit from a I7 however right now it doesn't make a big difference.
I would get a I7 if I was buying a computer right now however I would rather have a 780 ti with a i5 than a 780 with an i7 unless I was into video editing and used handbrake all the time.
I want the haswell e however the price will probably be ridicules...

The 2 months is a possibility however rare if you buy a decent brand. The frame rates are realistic for those games without MSAA and SSAA. The 770 will also have random significant drops below 45 in both games.
Personally I would play both Metro LL & Crysis 3 on high with the gtx 770.
The card will be tortured when playing those games on ultra without the extra AA.
The 770 direct CU will do a good job cooling the card and will probably last a few years and all of the cards have warranty just in case they kick the bucket.

as you can see gtx 780 ti don't go lower than 50 fps at 1080p at any game and gtx 770 can control every single game at maxed up settings

Just because Linus did a review a few months ago with overclocked cards and gave you fps only withholding frame time variance, actual gameplay and minimum dips.
I like Linus's system build video's however his reviews aren't that great, I prefer Tomshardware or Tiny Tom Logan for reviews & overlooking.
I do my own testing and make my own conclusions however you can believe whoever you want.
Linus is the guy who tested metro LL and said you might as well use 4x ssaa with a gtx 780 because that's why you buy a high end card even if the frame rate is very low and the frame time variance is high.
Tomshardware is by far better and makes sense to true enthusiasts and gives great guidance to beginners...

Using a Linus review to convince an op that a 770 will play crysis 3 on ultra with max AA will increase the amount of disappointed purchasers.
it's better to be realistic...
Linus has been getting better over the years because he is being groomed by vendors like Intel and Corsair however his technical guidance is mediocre and misleading at times.
