Help storing multiple SSDs

Hi guys,

Call me crazy, but this is my plan. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on storage racks. I don't even want to use old computer cases - too crammed internally and take up too much space. I'm thinking of buying a plastic storage rack from Lowe's for $14.98! It's got 4 levels - one each for 32 SSDs. Right now I have 28 SSDs. My plan - somehow secure the 500 watt power supply to the bottom shelf - gorilla tape?. Secure a SAS expander on each shelf (I have one now). Run cable from expander to controller. Run fanout cables from expander to drives. Put drives in plastic bag! Am I crazy? Will this work? From what I've read, the total power consumption of expanders and 128 SSDs (controller limit) will be under 500 watts. It appears I can get molex cable extensions. Not sure on SAS cables. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Bruce

Solution
You'll have airflow issues if you put the drives in plastic bags.

Also, that 500W PSU won't supply all its power on the 3.3V/5V lines, and those are what most SSDs use.

Thanks. I''ll just put a 500 watt power supply with each expander. Would that be enough to power 32 SSDs? I read online that each SSD consumes less than 1 watt and the expander around 11 watts. So I'm thinking that should be plenty of power. As for the air flow, is that really an issue with SSD's. I didn't think they ran that hot. In any event, I scrapped the plastic bag idea, and the storage shelf idea. I found some nice stackable storage bins that eliminate the need for bagging. Each bin has holes all around and an almost-open face for access. But there will still just be a clump of drives sitting there. Do you think if I spread them out as much as possible and put a fan (or two) in each bin, I'll be OK with airflow Thanks again for your timely and helpful advice. Let me know what you think of my latest ideas!

Thanks a million!
