Hi,
This is my first post on this forum, I have found this forum very helpful over past experience.
=============================================================================
I have Dell Inspiron N5050, which has 3GB RAM. In few months, I am going to university and so I need 8GB RAM.

My laptops 3GB RAM includes two RAM chips, one is 2048 MB DDR3-SDRAM (1333 MHz) and other chip is 1024 MB DDR3-SDRAM (1333 MHz).

How do I upgrade it to 8GB.

One option I found was: http://goo.gl/X7JHwY what are my other options?
Please tell if you know of any other good manufacturer.

Can I also upgrade my RAM to 16 GB? I was not able to find two 8GB RAM chips compatible for my laptop.

thank you guyz, I hope someone will have solution for my problem.

You need 2 modules, 4gb each to complete the 8GB maximum the Inspiron N5050 can support. Instead of buying from any online store you would do better visiting a RAM finder from any of the top selling brands and once you find the right RAM, either buy it from them or search for the specific model and specifications.

Check which are the best makes of RAM here and type on a web browser search engine something like "Kingstom Ram Finder", or "Kingston Ram Configurator", or Crucial ram finder, Corsair, etc.. and on the ram finder either type the computer make and model or use the auto finder which should download a small program that will scan your computer to find the right ram for it and open the website's specific page for you.

thanks for answering. I will do as you suggested.

I have another question with regard to what you just mentioned:
When I open System Information on my laptop, it says that my system has 3GB RAM out of maximum 16 GB. Doesn't that mean that my laptop can support 16GB ?? is there any 16GB ( 2x8GB) RAM kit even available for my laptop ?

I am confused.

Under system memory tab, it says:
Total Physical Memory 3.00 GB
Maximum Supported Memory 16.00 GB

but under Operating sytem tab, it says
Operating System
Maximum OS Memory 8.00 GB

Also, I want to know if replacing 1333 MHz RAM with 1600 MHz RAM will create problems or not. If yes, how to avoid that?

it shouldn't, your os may only support physically 8GB memory max.

Do you have 16gb ram installed?

You need to install a third party system information program. I'd suggest HWiNFO on which you can look under Motherboard / Memory Controller / Max. Memory Module Size by the number of slots. If the maximum memory size per slot is 8GB and your computer has two, then it's 16GB total RAM support. If your OS is 64 bit it should support all the RAM you can install, and if a 32 bit, it will only recognize 3.5GB max.

They have 8GB RAM modules for laptops here.

My OS is 64 bit. My laptop has two slots. However, I was not able to find maximum memory size per slot using the software you recommended. However, from other sources I found that my hardware can support 16 GB max RAM.
But windows 7 will only recognize max 8 GB RAM. I also came to know that changing BIOS settings to accommodate more RAM will create problems.

So, I plan to go with max 8GB as recommended in your first answer.

Thanks for answering. Feel free if u want to add something else.

See the image for the section of HWiNFO where RAM support is described. The 8GB Windows 7 limitation is due to the Edition... Starter and Home Basic support up to 8GB... you'd have to install at least Home Premium to use the full 16GB hardware support, but 8GB is said to be sufficient for today's computing needs... I read all the time people saying that 16GB is overkill... so you may do better saving the difference for a copy of Home Premium later on.

Windows 7 64 bit RAM support limitations.
Starter: 8GB
Home Basic: 8GB
Home Premium: 16GB
Professional: 192GB
Enterprise: 192GB
Ultimate: 192GB

Here's an image of HWiNFO showing the full RAM support per slot in my old Dell.. notice this is the hardware support, the installed RAM is further below

Yup, I have decided to go with 8GB.
I downloaded version 4.38-2200 of HWiNFO, this version did not have the max. memory option that's why I didn't found it.

Thanks for the information.
