I have an OEM copy of Windows 7 installed on my SSD with EVERYTHING on it including my pictures, games, and programs. I recently upgraded to a Sabertooth 990FX after my previous motherboard failed. Now I can't get into Windows. So I get into the bios and I select to boot from the Windows disk. It brings me to the "Repair your computer" screen and I see startup repair, restore pc, etc. I can also install windows but I don't want to do that because I don't have another SSD or another key..... So do I buy another SSD and windows key?? I really don't want to lose everything. If I do will I still have all of my stuff on my old SSD???

Solution

It is a new install...
W7 oem ties itself to the motherboard. you can try a reinstall and maybe you'll get lucky, but otherwise you will need a new windows license. You could also try phone activating the install and speak with somebody. MS can be pretty obliging.

You should see if you can access the ssd with a linux livecd. That might help you find out the extent of the damage.

You should be able to re-use the same key again.
But you would have to do a Clean install which deletes everything off the drive.
If I were you I would first copy all data off the drive onto another PC.
Hope this helps!

With a new motherboard, very often you get the result you're seeing. The old install does not want to boot with the new hardware.
Completely different issue than needing or not needing a new license.

So...with a new motherboard, a fresh install is usually a good idea, sometimes required (as it appears to be in your case).

MS is generally pretty good about using that original key in the event of a motherboard fail. But they do not have to.

I just formatted my 320GB hard drive from my old Vista machine and now it's installing Windows again. So I CAN reuse my OEM key??

With a new motherboard, that is a definite 'maybe'. Completely up to Microsoft.

save your self some grief... get a drive and fresh windows and do a fresh install then ues your old drive as a storage drive to save and pull ypur files from it ... bill wants money and you need a retail windows to do as you are... this is why I always do retail not oem windows

Thank you very much. I was well aware of the possibility of needing a fresh install but didn't know if it would be required. After the install is finished will I be able to load onto my desktop with everything on it since I didn't touch my SSD? Thanks a ton.

I will probably be doing that if none of this works out haha that will be a last resort.

It is a new install. All your previous applications will need to be reinstalled. You can't just move the programs and 'the desktop' on to the new installation.
