I reapplied thermal paste because I learned that I did it horrible the first time. Now my PC won't show signal. All the fans spin, although nothing on my screen. I have checked for bent pins and I have reset CMOS.

CPU: 8350
CPU cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: AsRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
GPU: Asus 280x (v2)
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620w

Solution

Yeah, if the CPU looks good and the system is still not working, the first thing I would do is just buy a new motherboard and restart. Before that though, redo your CPU installation process and make sure everything is just perfect. Look into the CPU pin holes in the socket with a flashlight, and see if any crap is in there.

Once again, good luck!

Is your monitor on?
Haha just kidding

Are your GPUs fully in and connected? Make sure the power supply plugs to your GPUs are all in too.

Lol yeah, my monitor is on and my GPU is fully in and it is connected

Hmm I would honestly just try putting it in again. That's really the only thing I can think of.

I did the same thing to my old computer, and the fans and everything spun but I broke pins on the CPU.

Did you take the CPU out of the socket to apply the thermal paste?

Shit, marked as solution, on mobile

I did take out the CPU, but I checked the pins, nothing is bent.

There, I un-elected my answer for you.

Honestly, I would just redo the whole process and make sure it all looks great. Make sure there are no broken pins and that everything is done correctly. That's what i'd do.

Good luck!

If there is anything in there, how would I go about to remove it?

Vacuum it, use some commpressed air, or maybe even carefully shake it. If it is thermal paste in there, you probably could do some crazy crap and put isopropyl alcohol in there and let it sit for a sec and then dry it and make sure it's clean.

blow torch............. it'll be a pain. time stakingly difficult. rubbing alcohol/straight pins/toothpicks/.............no blow torch. and when you think you are done, sit overnight to make sure it's dry.

so what was the terrible job you did the first time.............. we ask so we can give the right advice.......... we're not going to find you and write dumbass on your house. maybe.

Also, if there is stuff on the CPU, you can soak that in Isopropyl alcohol. I soaked mine for about a minute then *very carefully* ran a paper towel between the pins and cleaned off all the thermal paste off the pins. Don't use a blow torch.

Yeah what did happen the first time? Too hot?

The terrible job the first time was just me applying too much, and taking the heatsink off to do things occasionally without reapplying (but this didn't cause overheating, and I couldn't had gotten anything on the socket because when I applied thermal paste with the chip in the socket, I only took it out to clean it.

I'm going to try soaking it then letting it dry.

First time I did it, I applied way too much. I did this about 2 months ago. The time, I applied a good ammount, although my PC won't start up to I probably did something wrong somewhere.

Use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol. I used some 91% from WalMart and it worked great! The thermal paste on my pins just fell right off.

Be VERY careful, it is very easy to bend and break pins while moving it around in the process. And don't forget, a glob of thermal paste a bit smaller than a pea is good, let the heatsink squish it so you don't get air bubbles.

Have fun!

i'll hear grief for this but............. when you put paste on the processor........ i always put a tiny little bit and spread it over the top of my cpu with my finger tip. thinner than a blade of hair. you don't need much. not like you're cementing a cinder block wall together.

What do you mean by soak? Do you mean you filled a bowl of cup with alcohol and then submerged it?

Yeah. I did only soaked bottom pin side, because I didn't want the whole thing underwater. Be careful that you don't bend pins. Let it soak for about 2 minutes, then use a paper towel to clean. Soak it for another 2 minutes, clean, do that like 3 times or so until you know it's perfect.

Good luck!
