It's not as simple as you might think. I tried explaining.

To be able to upgrade your graphics card safely we need to know what is your full system specification.
If the computer was bought pre-built then tell us the exact model. If not then we need to know the Motherboard model, CPU model, PSU model (power supply) and how much are you willing to spend on a new graphics card.

Well you can't really expect a card in this price range to be exactly a "gaming card". You could still play some Java and Flash games and titles older that 5 years but if you want to play some of the better looking games from today you will need a much better card.

If you have only bought the card and can return it you should consider doing that. Save up some more money if you can and buy something better.

If you tell us what are the specs of your PC (don't forget to include Power Supply model) and what is your budget I'm sure we can suggest something to suit your needs.

The "1gb nVidia card" doesn't mean much. There are probably 30 models of nVidia cards with 1GB RAM. You need to specify what exact model it is. The performance of a specific game doesn't depend entirely on the graphics card. Other components are important to various extend too. Like CPU, RAM etc.
You can not just compare your friends PC with yours only by the amount of video memory both graphics cards have.
