New MOBO and CPU, computer shuts off after 2 seconds

I have an issue. I just received my new MOBO and CPU (AMD FX 8320) over the weekend and my computer will shut off after about 2 - 3 seconds. There are no beeps, BIOs, POST etc, but all the lights and fans turn on. My computer was originally an HP Pavilion p7-1254, but a couple months ago I updated the graphics card to an Asus Radeon R9 290 and found that the old MOBO is bottlenecking everything. I have already upgraded the PSU to a Diablotek 600W so power is not an issue (850W PSU coming in the mail).

After looking online about what the issue could be, I have double checked all connections several times, and tried to isolate the issue by unplugging 1 thing at a time (found that the MOBO will stay on when the CPU is unplugged but still no POST, beeps, BIOS, etc). I have also tried 1 stick of RAM in slot 1 (also tried no RAM to see if there would be any beeps, but none occurred).

Because I found that the CPU was causing the issue, I have already double checked it's connections and have cleaned and re-applied the thermal paste to it, but that did not solve the issue.

I am at a loss now - as I cannot think of any other troubleshooting steps. I know nothing is wrong with the PSU as it works with the old MOBO and CPU in, I also know that it is highly unlikely there is something wrong with the CPU as AMD tests their CPUs before shipping them out, but why is it that the computer shuts down ONLY when the CPU is connected?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System SPECS:

CPU: AMD FX 8320
MOBO: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3
CASE, HDD, and RAM are from the HP Pavilion p7-1254

I had a very similar issue. The issue for me was the Power supply. The power supply could not supply enough power for the GPU. I connected the GPU and it ended up damaging the power supply, causing the issue you have every single time. I tried disconnecting the GPU but had the same issue. The issue vanished upon replacing the power supply. Let me know.

Please note, diablotek lists its power ratings as MAXIMUM load, not RMS or constant load. It would be safe to bet that the constant load is only HALF of this.

Currently I have an EVGA P2-1000 with a TEN YEAR warranty, and I don't ever want to look back.

Ingtar33 is correct. Try the computer with the old CPU. Update the BIOS. Throw the new CPU in. Make sure you clean them and use new paste. Last thing you need is the CPU to freeze on a BIOS update.

Do you know I could go about updating the BIOS without the CPU? The socket type is not compatible with my old CPU.

You need BIOS version 1401 or higher for that CPU. That BIOS version is dated 2012/09/13, so that is likely not a problem.

Your old hard drive is set up to run a FM1 processor, so you will need to do a new install of Windows. You won't be able to use the old Windows installation.

When the 4-pin ATX 12V Power connector is not plugged in your CPU is not running. Your fans and lights might run. Do you have a speaker connected?

I would try to get the system to POST (Power On Self Test) with just the Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3000 GPU.

Yes, I have been trying to get it to work with just the integrated GPU - I don't have the r9 290 connected.

I had an issue with an unsupported CPU on an older BIOS version with am FM2 board. It's worth mentioning that the computer still booted and I could access BIOS, however when I tried to access windows it would bluescreen instantly. I imagine that not all incompatible CPU issues would run as smoothly. Best bet is to call local computer shops and ask if they have a spare CPU in that socket that's supported stock to update the BIOS. Maybe they'll let you use one for a while. Do you have any idea what version of the BIOS shipped with that CPU?

his computer won't POST. this has nothing to do with his windows install. the BIOS isn't recognizing the cpu. Just because there was a new bios release doesn't mean the hardware has it. for all we know that motherboard was sitting in a warehouse for 18 months or so... and is 100% incompatible with that cpu right now.

his problem is identical to a cpu incompatibility, and without a "compatible" cpu (phenomII, AM3 AthlonII cpus) he won't be able to get it to post and won't be able to update the bios, and won't be able to get his system to start.

My suggestion to the OP is to contact ASUS and see if they can send you an updated BIOS chip & bios chip change tool.

Do you mean the BIOS version of the MOBO? Not off hand I don't, unfortunately. I am at work right now so I'd have to check when I get home.

I will give that a shot tomorrow along with going to a PC shop and seeing I could use an older AM3 CPU to update the BIOS. Thank you.
