My set up is i54440cpu Gigabyte r7260x twinfan
gpu on a Gigabyte spiper mr Mobo psu is 700w
this is linked tp a full hd1080p monitor/tv, would i see any benifit in adding a second gpu identical to the existing one, and would it be feasible?

You would indeed benefit from an additional GPU, but I don't think is worth it for an entry card like the 260x, you would benefit way more from a single GPU, it should also be more power wise.
You should put your actual GPU on sale, you would get a good price, while its a recent card. Depending on your budget, you could get something much more powerful.
I wouldn't recommend SLI or crossfire with GPUs worth less than 300$, even there...

You would see a benefit, roughly a 50% increase in performance, but I also recommend going with a single powerful card compared to two weaker ones. Dual GPU's doesn't always scale as well for some games, and you run into more driver issues.
