Hi there,

I live in India and have decided to upgrade my ancient 8400 GS. I am looking at two cards based on my budget, a GTX 650 1 GB and a GTX 750 1 GB. The criteria of judgement is not power consumption, as there is only a 9 W difference. The winner is decided on the basis of:

1. Performance
2. Price-performance ratio.
So can you help me choose? [BTW, there is a $40 difference].

Also, can I use my 8400 GS for PhysX rendering? Or is it better to use a 650 Ti?

Please help me decide.

My specs are:
OEM Acer Veriton Desktop
8 GB 2133 MHz RAM
Intel i5 - 760 @ 2.8 GHz
Some Acer Mobo, Power Supply and Case
Zotac GeForce 8400 GS 1 GB (Soon to be upgraded)

Solution
If you're torn between the 7850 and the 750, get the 7850.
If it's a 650 and 750, get the 750.
If it's a 750Ti and 7850, then get the 750Ti.
If you decide to upgrade the PSU, don't go with local brands like Odyssey, VIP, Intex, Zebronics(especially; that company is better off making sound systems than PSUs), or any other such brands.
Get Corsair(avoid the VS), Antec(The VP550P is good; Flipkart lists it as VP550), or Seasonic(prefer these if you can afford them).
Upgrade the power supply first.
I have a Acer PC too, and it has a Core 2 duo with 2 GB of RAM. Obviously older than yours, but still the same vendor, atleast.
Acer put low end 250W power supplies in their PC's. They have good longevity, but won't run a graphics card.
Get a Corsair CX430 or Seasonic ECO 400/500 first(Seasonic recommended) and then get the graphics card.

I'd recommend getting the 750, as it's a fair bit faster than the 650, around 20%.
I got a 650 for my PC, as far as my CPU is concerned, it's plenty. I got the one from Gainward. It was cheap, so I had my doubts, but the card turned out to be great.

Well, my 8400 GS has a max load of around 80 W, so I figured that it would be okay to use the same power supply, seeing the other two have around 55 W and 64 W. The 650 I am looking at is also from Gainward. If I get a 450 W/400 W PSU, will I be able to run the 650 Ti, which is around 40% faster than the 650 and around the same price as the 750 [India]? And do I really need to upgrade my PSU to run the other two, as my budget will then automatically suggest the 650.

Just to throw this in there; from the reviews I've seen, the 750 is a touch faster than the 650 ti (non Boost). So if the card you're talking about is a plain 650 ti, and not a 650 ti Boost (that's faster than both of them), I'd suggest taking the 750 if it's the same price. It's slightly more powerful, and uses exactly half as much power (55W vs 100W).

(Source - the card reviewed was overclocked a minuscule 13MHz, which would have had a negligible effect on the results)

@Damn_Rookie,
So can I keep my stock PSU and get a GTX 750 (or a Ti, if my budget allows me to)?

Or would you advise me buying a 3 months old HD 7850 from my friend for around the same price as the 750, along with a separate power supply?

I'll defer to the opinion of cst1992 when it comes to the PSU in your computer; he has more first hand knowledge from the sounds of things. If he thinks you should get a new PSU, well, then I'm not going to argue with him :)

If the 7850 is in normal working order, really is only 3 months old and hasn't been wrecked by your friend, then yes, for the cost of a new 750 that sounds like a good deal. The 7850 is slightly slower than the R7-265 (which itself is just a higher speed 7850), so would be quite an improvement over the 750. Just remember you need a new PSU to go with it.

So, is the 7850 faster than the 750 Ti?

A 750 ti? Well that's different. The 750 ti is about as fast as the 7850 on average (it varies a little either way depending on the game in question).
