Ok so im planning on building my rig, i wanted an average gaming pc that would also be great for music production.

Ive spent the last few days researching all of the parts i want, but im not sure about the APU.

Here is my build list:

AMD APU A10 6800K Black Edition
MSI A88X-G45 Atx FM2+ Gaming Motherboard
Gainward nVidia GeForce GTX 750TI
Seagate 1TB Barracuda
TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
Corsair 600W Builder Series Power Supply
Samsung 24x SH-224DB DVD-RW SATA OEM
BitFenix Spectre 120mm Fan - White
BitFenix Comrade Midi-Tower - Black
Windows 8.1

I was looking at the AMD A10 series because they were recomended to me to go with the MSI motherboard. But they are pretty orientated around built in graphics. Seeing as im getting a graphics card as well, is it a waste of money to get an APU?

Thanks!

The AMD APU's aren't as good as they were hyped up to be (atleast not IMHO). And if you're going to get a standalone GPU then you would be better off just buying an AMD FX-6300 or 6350 because they are better processor altogether. It would also be better if you planned to upgrade your graphics card in the future.

If you still want to go with the A10 6800K it would be better to get an AMD graphics card like an R7 265 and do dual graphics. This is basically the same thing as crossfire, except it's with an APU and graphics card.
yep, no point in getting an a series apu, a athlon x4 760k for example is the same thing if you don't plan to use the integrated graphics and it works in fm2(+) boards. an alternative (though a bit more expensive is to get a fx 6300 and an am3+ board)

Thank you all for the quick responses!
The motherboard i want is and FM2+ socket, and i think the FX-6300 is AM3+ (i assume its not backward compatible in anyway)

really great full for the advice!

is Athlon the way to go? that feels like a step backward.
should i consider a different motherboard?

thanks again!

FM2+ and AM3+ are completely different sockets, you need to get a new motherboard for an AM3+ CPU.

If I were you, I'd get an FX-6300. It's the processor I have and it has excellent price for the performance it dishes out.

I have the ASRock 970 Extreme 4, that is a good one. A slightly cheaper one would be the Asus M5A97 R2.0.
