I have been having a problem with my keyboard most of the time when I boot the keyboard is lit up and looks to be working, but none of the keys respond. I fix it by unplugging it then plugging it back in and it works fine. What could be causing this? I have tried all the different USB ports and the problem persists.

you try both front and back port the check the keyboard usb cable connector there are little tiny flat pins the outside one are for power and the middle are for data try to gently lift them a bit with a little flat screwdriver to see if the system detect on start up .

if it's usb, try check your bios to see if it is supported. that's what i did. it should say enable usb keyboard. my keyboard had a problem even though it works for a while. i still had to enable it in the bios. just a suggestion.
