A friend has a new Acer Aspire V5 - an 11" laptop with one memory bank of 2 Gb.
It has Win 8.1 (64bit), and appears rather sluggish.
I have cleaned off most of the original bloatware- it now uses only WinDefender as the anti-virus/spyware.

Still, it seems slowww. Would replacing the mem with an 8G DIMM (approx $80) or even a 4G ($40) speed it up?

Yes, I know that the 64bit OS is useless on a 2G machine. I wasn't the suit that sold it.

It's not useless, the processor still runs 64 bits, it's ultimately faster.

What processor is he running?
What videocard?

2 GB is technically sufficient, it should actually work with 1 GB on the updated version. Did you download Update 1 for 8.1? Should make the OS even smaller.
8 wouldn't hurt though.

Addendum-
When I next see it, I'll do a "My Windows / Properties" and check out the processor. And do a "Windows Experience Index".

Maybe even do a CPU-Z ! ;-)

It was bought less than a month ago, and presumably has all the the updates to 8.1, including the 8.1.1 - MS-Update is set to Automatic.
But the user is loathe to spend another $80 on a DIMM that may not improve the speed much.
Not sure if the disk is a 5400RPM or an SDD. I'll have to check this out. But even an SDD will set them back another $110 or so.
Basically the user just doesn't wanna throw good money after bad.
They complain that this "NEW" laptop is slower than their big 4-yr old Dell laptop which has 4 GB and runs... yep- VISTA!

I have the V5-123-3466 with AMD E1 1GHz processor and 4GB SO-DIMM memory. It has a WD 500gb Blue hard drive.

I've sped mine up by disabling all visual effects, reducing menu latency timings in the registry, running defrag, cleaning out all of the temp files for both regular disk clean-up and system files clean-up, and running the minimum amount of processed needed for windows 8.1 to function properly. I also cleaned up and restored the Windows Image file - I bought mine used.

The processor scores a 3 on the Windows Experience, so it's no speed demon. I just bought a reconditioned Samsung EVO 840 120gb SSD to install in place of the WD drive since I don't necessarily need a ton of storage space - it's an augmentation to my existing desktop computer. The SSD will speed up disk access functions and that will help in the overall experience. I got my SSD for $50 on eBay.

Beyond that, spending $80 on 8gb of RAM seems foolish, but now that you have the machine, other than fiddling with software tweaks, there isn't a whole lot more you can do.

For the cost of this "netbook" + a ram upgrade, or even a SSD upgrade, you're already spending as much as what could get you a 15" laptop with at least an i3 CPU. In my case, I purposely bought this computer for it's size. I wanted something small, very portable, great battery life (mine will run for 7+ hours on a full charge), and be able to run the few pieces of software I need.
