Hey guys, I'm hosting some websites on my desktop, but as how uncomfortable that can become I decided to build a server. I wonder though, what would be the difference building another desktop and have it as server, than building the actual server? If anyone has an advice, I'd really appreciate it as well a build for one :) Thank you!

Thank you, at which point would it make though? My connection is 100/10 :)

Depends what your website is doing, exactly. Is it just a static page? Won't need much. Is it running some kind of software or databases? Than you may need more power.

I would focus on low energy consumption myself, with Apache in a Debian distro.

Oh I see, well website isn't static, it's advanced with nodejs server, running services, as well JS and PHP, some RoR too. It uses PostGre as database, it's not that small either, so I guess I'll need more power :) Thanks, that helps!

How big?

Like 20 gigs?
Or 2 gigs?

I run a Snorby web server on a 600 Mhz VIA mini ITX board. You don't need much power for a static website. Only if it's updating or making changes do you need some muscle. Web servers can generally be hosted on a Virtual machine without much issue.
