So I'm building a PC in the next few days as an upgrade to a very old, out of date machine (Pentium 4 based). However, I was wondering what the easiest way to transfer all the files across from the old machine to the new one would be. The main part I'm worried about is how I am going to be able to get the new PC booted with the old files if the motherboard drivers are those of the old motherboard. I'm also wondering whether I can install a new OS (Win7 Pro) over the top of the Windows XP which is installed. I'd appreciate any help that people can give me and thanks in advance.

Solution
You can't backup and restore applications. The data, yes, but not applications themselves. They will have to be re-installed to make the appropriate registry entries and system changes.
If you are using a new motherboard together with the hard drive from your old machine, you can't use the Windows installation that's already on that drive. You have to format the drive to zap the old Windows, then install whichever version of Windows you intend to use.

When that's done and your new Windows is up and running, install the drivers for your new motherboard. If you didn't get a driver CD with the new board you can download the drivers from the board manufacturer's website.

I'm going to try to backup and then restore just the programs that are already installed on there (excluding system files) after I've installed the OS, using AOMEI Backupper. Do you think that would work?
