Hello all!

I've got a pretty general question for you all. I have some experience doing research on computer hardware to build my own computer. I know where to go to for reviews, for advice, for deals, and the likes of that, but I realize that I myself don't truly know computer hardware in-depth. I could probably build a satisfactory computer with what I know, but I wouldn't truly know what pieces I'd be buying regarding Graphics Cards, CPUs, Memory, Storage, Motherboards, Routers, etc. Right now, I'm interested in understanding computer hardware at a fundamental level and then building on that until I feel I truly understand all the different parts of a computer and am able to do sound research and know what it is I'm buying.

I guess what I am asking here is if any of you know or are familiar with some sort of sites or videos or even online courses that would assist me in learning all that I can. Concerning history, hardware design, differences between brands, all of that complicated stuff. I love Tom's Hardware and come here for all of my questions, but what I'm asking now is for a source that would answer the questions I haven't even thought of yet. I'm planning on being a Computer Science major, but I know my studies are going to be reaching far beyond and outside the classroom. This is something I'm passionate about and excited to learn more about.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your answers!

Thanks for the video!

I do have knowledge of how to build a computer, that part isn't what I'm trying to learn more about. What I'm talking about is just understanding each part of a computer in more depth. What characteristics of Motherboards do I need to look at? Are there legitimate differences between graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD or is it just personal preference? Does it matter which brand of RAM I purchase or are all of them pretty much the same? And how so? Those sort of questions.

I hope I cleared up what I'm wanting to learn. This could be simply a project that I need to look into myself as far as research, but if anyone here knows of a site or site(s) that can give me this sort of information, I would appreciate it very much!

Thanks!

Your quest intrigues me. At first I thought there must exist some central, organized source of knowledge about the theoretical underpinnings of our beloved hobby but now I find myself wondering. The bible used to be, and may still be, the book "upgrading and repairing PCs" which I highly recommend. There are also video tutorials available for the Comptia A+ certs from places like CBT which are very useful and more or less address the issue directly.

Some of the best writing on the subject is found at sites like Tom's and Anandtech in their in depth reviews. Tech reviewers are a dime a dozen and many of them are only slightly better informed than your average hobbyist but the reviewers at these venerable old tech sites are by and large extremely knowledgeable, maybe the best this particular field (Anand is amazing). The only problem is that these reviews usually presume a level of knowledge well beyond the beginner and the casual reader. But, you can still stop and Google the obscure parts or else follow the hyperlinks to previous stories and bit by bit you can piece it all together.

This is wonderful. Thank you SO much. I've been watching for the past few days the CompTIA A+ videos done by Professor Messer which I'm thoroughly enjoying and plan to continue, but the ones I'm watching are two years old, and while that might not be very long ago, in this world of computers where the tech is advancing at breathtaking speeds, new guides and lessons are needed to be given constantly. I'll probably continue watching Professor Messer's videos because I think it's a great foundation, but the link you've shared me seems to be much more up to date. The videos date to only be 4 months old. I'll definitely watch those as well.

Thank you again! I'm stoked to get going on this research!
