CPU Overheating (?)

I'm not exactly sure if the post should go here or not, but I'll go ahead anyway. My PC has never had an issue with overheating before. I recently started playing Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn and my computer started getting really, really loud. I assume that came from the GPU fans increasing speeds. After checking temps, my CPU was at 40c and my GPU was around 55-60c. Then, the computer got louder, and louder, and louder and then shut off completely. If I removed the power and put it back in, the computer would only turn on for a split second, then shut right off. After about 30 minutes, it finally worked. It overheated a second time but was able to start right back up. Today, it overheated AGAIN (I really need to stop playing this game, but I don't want to waste the membership.) and it's been an hour and it won't turn on. I opened up the case and it's all very clean inside. At first, I thought it was the GPU but maybe it's the CPU or even the power supply. Did something fry or die? I'm worried this thing broke.

tl;dr - computer overheated from a game and won't turn on.

how much thermal paste did you put on the processor? putting too much acts as an insulator rather than transferring heat to the heatsink. you'd want at least a "pea sized" dot on the center (that is recommended). other than that how do your fans look?

xbizz: Well, I didn't put any. The stock CPU cooler came with pre-applied thermal paste which apparently is just fine. The fans are all clean. The CPU, GPU, and case fans are all clean, so I really have no clue what happened.

Hlias: I assume it overheated! The PSU and GPU were very hot, the processor, not so much. Those are are pretty standard temps so I'm not sure why it overheated, if that's what happened. When I turn on the pc, it turns on for a split second. The LED's light up, the gpu, cpu, and case fans all turn on for a split second as well, and it turns right back off.
