My computer will randomly go into a total freeze, which requires a hard restart to get it out of. This issue just started a few days ago, where-as before the system was completely stable. How can I tell if this is a hardware or software issue?

Solution
Normally issues are written to Event Viewer.

Use a tool like memtest86 to check your ram and a tool like Seagate's SeaTools to check your hard drive. It could also be a CPU heat issue or GPU issue.

If you have a Dell or HP computer, there might be a diagnostics option available after your PC posts and before it starts to boot up Windows.

Once you verify that it's not a hardware issue, open a command prompt as an administrator and run "sfc /scannow." Also check for malware/viruses.
Hardware issue you can stress test for with memtest86+ for memory, Intel Burn Test and Prime 95 for CPU, Occt for GPU only and HDDScan to view the smart functions on the HDD.

if these all pass it will be a software conflict with is hard to find but truning off programs and services one at a time will give you the info you need.
