I have a Samsung 840 Evo as my primary drive, I tried to set up a second 840 Evo as a USB drive and it would not even show up

I purchased a second Samsung 840 Evo due to the first one I had purchased showing up as failing in the Samsung Magician. The first one was not actually failing, it was an apparent bug in the magician software, so I decided to use the second 1 tb 840 Evo as an external USB drive. I had a Anker USB 3.0 SSD case that I had previously used for an old 512 gig SSD and it worked perfectly. However, when I swapped out the old 512 gig SSD with my extra Evo 840 1 tb it never powered up, and was never recognized on my computer.

The same thing had previously happened when I was trying to use the data migration software to move my OS and stuff over to the newer 840 evo.

Any idea why my second 840 evo is not showing up, or even powering up? The LED on the Anker case doesn't come on when the evo is inside it.

Solution
Are you guys checking in Disk Management to Initialize and Format the drives? Also, if you're going to use them via USB, make sure you don't use an Enclosure. They cause issues with the Samsung SSDs.

I am having exactly the same problem with Samsung EVO 840 1 TB. Tested on various laptops a brand new device. Neither on SATA 2 nor SATA 3 it was recognized. Sometimes recognized by the BIOS, but after reboot gone again.

Replaced by another brand new Samsung 1 TB. Still the same, not even detected once. Other SSD-drives are recognized in the same laptops. Found no solution yet. According to BIOS and Samsung compatibility specifications they should work together.

Did the Samsung 1 TB ever work at your place?
