My evga 8800 GTX finally died on me after about 7 years of gaming. Very good card that was still handling games today. Im currently using my i5 3570k onboard graphics. I game at 1080 60hz currently (my monitors max). I'm having a hard time deciding between a few options.

1. aftermarket 290 for $400
2. aftermarket 290x for $500
2. gtx780 for $500
3. sub $200 card then wait for maxwell

Is the lower power consumption of maxwell cards worth holding out for? I'm aware that these cards are gonna be attractive to miners and as such the price will be high.

Wait for GTX 800 series, there may be a surprise for us!

The release date is not confirmed and if there are any, it is subject to change.

Maxwell are expected to handle 4k much better, making the current cards which don't handle it so well, not the best option yet.

Sub $200 card and then go maxwell!

There's not even a release date for gtx 8xx series, let alone specs available yet. You can buy gtx750ti maxwelll card now if you want.

For 1080 gaming a 780 or 290 is fine. Under $200 try a R9 270x

I understand theres not a release date yet, but after seeing how much little power the gtx750ti maxwelll cards use, I was wondering if I get a 290/gtx780 now when the new cards get released will I be paying more in electricity then is worth it?

just because the specs aren't released (or even said when), doesn't mean it is worth the wait!

They are projected to be much more powerful and use much less power, due to 4k just being released and newer technology.

Get the GTX 750 Ti for now and when the 800 cards are released, then get one and use the GTX 750 Ti for PhysX. (If your PSU can handle it, of course.)

so how well should the 270 hold up vs the 270x? what about the 2gb vs the 4gb version?

the R9 270/X will be fine, though it won't handle these next gen games so "well", though if you upgrade, a much better choice like you will.

as for 2GB vs 4GB, stick with 2GB. Even this is a GTX 770, same concept applies (2GB vs 4GB)

all of those games using three 1080p screens on modern day games, which some use over 2GB Vram, there was no difference in FPS, it is only worth it if you go SLI/Xfire, but with one, worthless.
