so originally all my usb ports except one (the one with my keyboard and mouse by the way i have the keyboard plugged into the computer and the mouse plugged into the keyboard) didn't work. i looked it up and i got some advice to uninstall the usb hubs so i did and then none of the usb ports worked at all (even my mouse and keyboard).i turned off the computer with the power button and turned it back on and it said "found new hardware click wizard to install" the problem: neither the mouse or keyboard work so i cant install it. the weird thing is i can go into the bios by pressing f12 and the keyboard works and the mouse lights up but when i go to windows neither work. i know it is not a problem with the keyboard because it will work in the bios. so what i want to know: how do i fix this? what caused it? and how to get all of my usb ports to work? (not just the keyboard and mouse one). i have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Solution

Not unless you know someone who will let you use their copy of XP to install. Then you would activate it with your product code on the CoA sticker... not the one on the installation disk/box.

If it is too old, it won't have USB3.0. The USB3.0 ports will be blue.

Check device manager: start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager -> look for the usb port in the list to see if it’s disabled (you should be able to enable it). Another way is to check if the USB driver is up-to-date. You can try to update USB device driver and see if the problem can be fixed. PCDriverUpdateFix.com can resolve any USB device problem.

But does it have a product key? A product key will be a series of 5, five digit character groupings separated by dashes. That is the key you will need to re-activate Win7.

You can download a .ISO file here and use it to burn a Windows 7 installation DVD.

The install will allow full windows access for 30 days. During that time you are expected to activate to make it legal. After 30 days and no activation, the OS will revert to a subset of features only.

i have 2 250gb SATA hard drives on it could i just install it on the second hard drive so it wouldn't erase all the data on the primary one? if i cant install it on the second hard drive its no big deal because this is not my primary computer its just sort of a project.

Well, that link won't work for you then. As soon as you can afford to, get either Win7 or 8. XP isn't supported by MS anymore. You can't get any updates or fixes.

You can install an operating system to any drive you want, but it has to be set as the boot drive in BIOS for the system to use it to boot.
