Hello Everyone..

I need some help regarding setting up an office with 40 desktop systems already installed. I want to install a central server from wherein the internet would be routed to the entire office, which would filter out a lot of websites and public emails and avoid loss of company data. Also, all the office data would be stored on the server and not on the individual desktops. Please guide.

IMO: best option will be linux-based server (ie: Debian). I think its one of the best! Becouse its software based not hardware.
Advantages:
1) everything can be customised and set just the way You want.
2) excelent protection for Your company's data.
3) very good base for aditional services such as (Apache server, SQL server, FTP...) there is too many possibilities to write them here.
4) Price - Debian is free! So You dont need to pay for software.
5) Its fully updatable / upgradable.
6) Stability and performance.

From what Your are said I think that You dont have much expirience with server / routing etc.
Here is what You will need:
1) Hardware (PC) the configuration depends on what You will use server for. (about 40-50 users, network sharing, maby FTP, and SQL database) = 4core intel cpu (prefered Xeon series), 4-8 (prefered 12-16 GB) ram it will run on 4mb but if You planning to use SQL and / or other database server it will run much better with more memory. HDDs for storage (size depends on type and size of files that You will use) 2 of them is minimum for RAID (mirror) data (much more safe), GPU - any (build in grapthics will do just fine, no need to invest money in good gpu), good network cards.
You can also find used base PC for your router (i prefer DELL T5400 or higher).

But the most important thing is that You need a lot of knowledge or someone who will build routing / server system for You. Depends on Your requierments, the cost can be high.

Of course You can install Debian yourself, perhaps even run routin on it, but to build system with advanced network sharing, filtering etc, You will need a good knowledge and understanding of IPtables, firewall... so i suggest that You should find someone who have an expirience with linux based servers.

Thank you for the reply jaml. I have contacted my vendor regarding the hardware recommendations you have provided. Also, i came across someone who is a friend of a friend of mine and belongs to the field of networking , he said he will come along with me and after surveying the office setup will recommend what should be done. I guess i am gonna be using the hardware setup you have recommended after the initial discussion i have had with this guy, coz he also suggested something similar to what you have said. Would come back to you for further assistance and also other out here. Thanks for your time.
