I'm looking at fitting a new sound card. Is there much difference in quality between cheapo cards and those a bit more expensive? What specs should I look for?

Okay, that has Realtek ALC887 for onboard audio. It's actually pretty good as far as onboard audio is concerned, so the quality increase going to a sound card would be negligible.

As for recording, idk. I'm not sure which sound cards support it, I'm not sure if any don't, I really don't know anything about recording audio.
On most speakers, a $35 sound card is supposed to sound the same as a $100 card. In fact, unless you have a bad motherboard, your integrated sound is probably fine.

I got an Asus Xonar DG and had a very noticeable improvement in sound quality, but I have nice speakers and the integrated audio on my old motherboard is terrible. So it's unlikely everyone will have an improvement.

What's your motherboard?

I believe it's an MSI H61M-E33. I have to add that I think the on-board sound is OK - I was seeking an improvement if possible, but also a way of recording from external sources.
