I currently have a

ASUS M5A97 EVO motherboard
AMD 965 PHENOM II X4 cpu
620 WATT HCG psu
NVIDIA GTX 770 GAINWARD gpu
2X 8GB CORSAIR RAM "not vengeance"
3x 2TB HDD

i want to upgrade to either a

SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1

CROSSHAIR V FORMULA Z

MAXIMUS VII HERO

and have something like a amd 8 core 8350 or a intel i7 "high up gaming type" cpu

and ill get some corsair vengeance ram too.

i want to keep it under 1k but i would like to just get an idea on what to get.
really want to know what to upgrade it to, i want it to be far far superior to my previous stuff lol

But keep in mind im only interested in changing my motherboard and cpu.. nothing else as the others are new

cheers :)

I think the ranger is about 35$-40$ cheaper. Both the ranger and the hero have a Z97 chip in it (all maximus VII motherboards have them).

The sabertooth is fine, allthough I never liked the aesthetics. It has a bit weaker audio components ,is missing some ROG features and has a bit of plastic with some fans in it on top, but the rest is pretty much identical to the hero. It is ca a 20$ step up from the hero in price.

If it was me, i would go for the ranger if you like the ROG look. The boards are all high quality, and as long as there are no features you want missing from the ranger, it is a good bet. But if you want the sabertooth looks and the thermal shield, go for it.

When it comes to processors, I would wait a bit, as I said...

And which features of the Hero are you going to use that are not on the ranger? The differences are:
-Hero supports a bit higher resolution with integrated graphics (which is irrelevant as you have a dedicated GPU)
-The Hero has a M.2 slot and 2 extra SATA ports (the M.2 slot steals bandwith from the PCIE slots however)
-Hero has some extra features on the LAN port (nothing to jucy, but some extra control over connections).
-Hero has the 2+8 phase power design (might be useful if you are afraid to fry your mobo with inconsistent voltage)
-Hero has some (IMHO unimportant) extra BIOS features. Have a look if you are unshure.
and finally: Hero has one extra fan header.

There is really no reason to buy the Hero over the Ranger IMHO...

because i get my components through work so discounted lol
and what about the sabertooth ?? is that good at all ?? as i would prefer to have the Z97 than a ranger/hero etc..

When it comes to processors, I would wait a bit, as I said before. The haswell-refresh that came now are basically factory overclocked haswell processors, and they have locked multipliers. So with an OC board they make no sense. Devils canyon is right around the corner, which might either give a performance increase for the i5K/i7K processors if youu buy a devils canyon, or maybe a small price drop for the i5K/i7Ks that are on the market. Either way, no reason not to wait to June first.
