Hi, I have a 11-year-old laptop, it's a Gateway 600YG2 with a Intel Pentium 4 - M @ 2.2 GHz and 400 MHz FSB and it's on a Intel 845MP Chipset. And I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade my CPU to some kind of Intel Pentium - M CPU on this system?

My Computer can't even play YouTube videos with the old Adobe Flash Player 9! Unless the resolution on both the computer and the video is pretty much at it's lowest. That's why I want to upgrade. Please reply soon, thanks!

Can you imagine putting a F1 engine in a 60's mini. 11 year old tech with modern day tech would be the same.
:)

You cannot be serious! Buy a new laptop. Heck, buy a used one.

Thanks for the replys guys. Yes I do realize that he is an oldie but I actually recently bought him and restored him to working order believe it or not. :D And I do have a modern gaming laptop too, but I thought it would be nice to give my old laptop some more horse power. ;)

And I was thinking of getting a new battery for it, and the Pentium - Ms take less energy than the Pentium 4 - Ms.

So for real this time, is it possible to upgrade my CPU in this laptop?

Sorry, I'll ask my grandfather, maybe he'll remember.

Ahh nostalgia. Worth remembering. :pt1cable:

Hmm...:heink: Is this somehow supposed to help me upgrade the CPU? :??:

Can you even get the CPU? And if you can, is the CPU fixed to the MB? If you can remove it like you can from a normal desktop comp, you might be able to upgrade it. I would look into upgrading the memory too. Upgrade to faster and at least 4GB of memory, since the laptop is more than likely running a 32-bit OS.

Yes I can get to the CPU and it is user-replaceable. I already have the RAM upgraded to the laptop's max of 1 GB. (Yes I know.) And it is running Windows XP Pro 32-bit.

"however it mentioned nothing about CPU upgrade"

That's because it's not upgradeable.

The CPU is removable only to facilitate replacement by the laptop manufacture, one of their service agents, or a repair centre, should the CPU fail.

Unlike retail motherboards for DIY desktop builds, laptop manufacturers do not publish a list of compatible processors for their laptop motherboards. That's why you can't upgrade it. The information you need isn't available.

If your looking to improve the laptop's performance, adding more RAM will give it a shot of adrenalin.

That however is the problem. I have already upgraded my laptop to it's spec'd max of 1 GB of PC2100 (266 MHz) RAM. And RAM would be no good when it comes to playing back YouTube videos as it is the CPU that is decoding the video.

And I have seen a few CPUs on the Intel site that look compatible with my current CPU socket and FSB speed. However I just don't know if my computer would accept it. My Current CPU is a Pentium 4 - M @ 2.2 GHz and 400 MHz FSB.

I have added links to CPUs that look compatible. My Chipset is the Intel 845MP.

Links: My Current CPU, CPUs I'm looking at: Pentium - M @ 1.7 GHz with 400 MHz FSB, Pentium - M 768 @ 2.10 GHz with 400 MHz FSB, Pentium - M 755 @ 2.00 GHz with 400 MHz FSB.

I am looking at those and others. They all look like they'll fit my CPU socket, and they have the same FSB speed as my MB. Do any of these look like they might work to you? They say that a Pentium - M @ 1.6 GHz performs similar if not better than a Pentium 4 - M at 2.4 GHz. Not to mention longer battery life because it uses less Watts.

Thank you for your reply! Yes as it seems I will most likely be able to get the CPUs on ebay for fairly cheap. However, it also looks like the Pentium - Ms won't work with my socket as well, there is a 1-pin difference and I've heard about electrical differences as well...

Could you help me figure out if any of the Pentium - Ms are compatible with my computer using the info given to the people above? Thank you!
