So I have been delving into computers and after building my first one I want to set up a network between my xbox, laptop, desktop, and something that my smartphone can tap into as well. I was also hoping that this network would be accessible to me as a VPN when I am away, I am pretty sure thats how vpns work but I am not sure. I just want to be able to share the information between these machines but I am not sure what I need to do or buy, or where to start.

I am pretty noob when it comes to networking, I really only know how to connect to wifi.

Thanks for the help!

If you have a Router, you already have all you need for a network. Everything attached to the router is on the same network. If you want the devices to share resources, you need to setup some type of sharing for them. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/file-sharing-essentials#1TC=windows-7

For VPN, you will need to set one up, if you have a good router, it may have VPN already as a feature. If not, you may want to get one with VPN unless you use software like LetMeIn or RealVNC to remote into your computer. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2030763/how-and-why-to-set-up-a-vpn-today.html
