I have an AMD a8 6600k apu with ASUS a88mx-a mobo. I have two problems:

1) My processor only supports till 1866 MHZ ram speed. But accidentally I got a 2133 MHz 4GB PNY chip to run my pc. On default settings, ram is set to 1600 MHz, so to maximise performance I had to manually set it to 1866 in BIOS. why is this so? shouldn't it automatically come down to 1866 MHz?? The seller wont take it back as seal is broken.

2) Even though I have this ram and 64 bit windows 7 but it still shows only 3.19 GB usable. Please help??

Early answers will be appreciated. Thnx in advance XD

You're already looking at the right spot, because you just quoted from your own motherboard manual: "refer to section 2.5 AI Tweaker menu".

As I said, though, for many AMD motherboards, all speeds above 1600 MHz are considered "overclock" speeds for the board (even if they're not really overclocked). So following the instructions in Section 2.5 of your motherboard manual lets you set it above 1600 MHz.

1) Not 100% sure, but I know with some of the AM3+ boards that they consider any RAM speeds past 1600MHz to be an "overclock" setting, even if the RAM is faster than that. It's possible the FM2+ boards have the same issue. Double-check in the motherboard manual to see what it says.

2) The A8 has onboard graphics, which are going to use some of the memory. However, since your motherboard probably has dual-channel memory anyway, you might as well get another 4GB RAM stick (at which point you should see the system have 7.19GB available).

If you really need the extra 800MB without getting a 2nd RAM stick, then you'll need to buy a discrete GPU & disable the onboard graphics...but since part of the cost-savings with the A-series is that you don't need to buy a discrete GPU, not to mention the vast price difference between a RAM stick & a discrete GPU card, just get a 2nd RAM stick.

But the asus motherboard says that it supports 1333,1600,1866,2100,2400(OC).

The default memory frequency is dependant on its SPD, which is a standard way of accessing information from a memory module. Under the default state, some memory module for overclocking operate at a lower frequency than vendor marked value. To operate at vendor marked value, refer to AI Tweaker menu(Exactly what I am doing).

I dont understand it. Please someone explain??
