I've decided to take the plunge and spend the money on intel. I like the fact Z97 is going to be upwardly mobile as the am3+ socket seems dead at the moment and i don't like the TDP of the 9590. Should i wait for devils canyon or just go ahead and get the stock i7-4790???? I don't overclock and just do mild gaming. I mostly do photoshop and adobe illustrator on my rig as i am a graphic designer part time. I am water cooled as i like a quiet system and when rendering the FX-8350 tends to warm up a bit. This is my first time questioning before i buy as normally i just buy what i want but i don't know anything about intel. Thanks for the help in advance.

Isn't the haswell refresh the same as Devil's Canyon? Pretty sure they started releasing a few days ago. There are still some CPUs, especially unlocked ones, left to release however.

Anyway... I rather doubt you'll see an immediate performance increase from the FX-8350, as it's capable of maxing anything. However, if your goal is to proactively switch sockets, then the i7-4790 would be great for gaming and rendering. And also the i7-4790 would be better than the FX-8350, of course, it's just that they're both so fast the difference may not be noticeable.

not a good move performance wise (barely any) but a good move socket and CPU wise, intel are the best when it comes to CPU's after $200, then AMD can only match in price and not performance.

What about waiting for X99 boards which will have DDR4 ram capability (first board that will) and then get a 4930k/5930k? A great choice but may cost an arm and leg to get hold of such a setup. It will be a lot when DDR4 first comes out, so best to wait a bit.

"For the record I'm one who believes the GPU does most of the FPS count not the CPU", that is 100% true, gaming performance goes GPU>CPU>Ram, with the GPU easily the most important, though with extreme GPU power you want a good balance of CPU also.

DDR4? X99? whoa!!!! i just got used to X97! :ouch:

seriously though....right now I'm lookin at just going to a cooler and quieter system. AMD system I have now is quiet on watercooling( 360 rad helps i guess). I just want to make sure this move will be cost effective for my needs. I'm not looking to upgrade after this for awhile. You know the old adage "spend a little, get a lot".

I just can't decide if i want to wait for the Devils canyon K-series of CPU's or get the locked ones. Like I said earlier I'm not an overclocker but I am interested if it will improve my gaming FPS. For the record I'm one who believes the GPU does most of the FPS count not the CPU. Running A GTX 780ti myself. Lovely card I must say.

if you are not going to overclock then the K-series CPUs from Intel are not useful to you and just get the locked ones but if you are going to overclock then get the K-series CPUs. the CPUs are the same besides bit being fliped to get overclocking turned on or off. in the K-series it is turned on and thus more expenive while in the non-K-seris CPUs it is turned off and runs the same until you overclock the K-series. there are other series of the same CPUs which some run cooler while others have a GPU and run at the same temp before overclocking the K-series.
really the GPU is more important than the CPU which is more import than getting faster / better RAM in the order of what you should get for a gaming rig.
