MSI Z97 vs Z87

Solution
The Z97 should be better for OCing, according to the Chipset specs and all, don't really know on the MSI mobos, I won't build on them, I've got the Asus Z87 Hero and just picked up the Z97 Hero, it does run cooler and OCs better, also handles faster DRAM than the Z87 version

Poor QC (quality control). Used to use a lot of their mobos, but back around 2008/09 their sales started slipping, then it got worse, and the QC starting dropping. I only build on Asus, the Rock and GB......but still I get more trouble calls (mobo) on MSI, then I do on any 2 of the brands I build on put together. So I'll fix them and do upgrades for people, but can't take a chance building for a client and have one DOA or something die on it 30-60 days down the road.

Would the motherboard I picked for ASUS above be good for OC and gaming or should I try a slightly better board? I am at the edge of my budget so I cant spend alot more.

One thing I noticed after reading the description of one of those MSI boards, it says that the graphics are faster if you have a MSI GPU also. Is that true about ASUS?

I haven't done any extensive testing, but did have a MSI Z87 and MSI GPU in the shop about a month ago, and the Card (a 770) didn't run any faster on the MSI board than it did on my Hero (and actually it OCed better on my Hero, which is unusual because supposedly they have designed the PCI-E Slots to handle more juice that pares with 'their' cards, personally I think it's just more of their marketing hype, sort of like when they changed the color scheme on the 45/65 et all from blue/black to red/black which was to try and grad market share from the Asus ROG mobos that have long been red/black

Well that's the $40 question ;) (To me for the OCing (CPU and DRAM) I'd say yes, but it comes down to the individual and their budget, I'd suggest marking the two mobos down and off to the side then line up all else you want need and see how the mobos fit with the rest
