Just picked up a perfectly functioning used Radeon 290 for $200 ($200!!!!) on eBay and I'd like to know what the options for cooling it are. The stock cooler is handling my 1110/1500MHz overclock very well, but it's in the low 90's°C.

I know NZXT sells a bracket for attaching tooth-mounted water coolers to a 290, but I don't really want to by a $100 G40 and then a $35 bracket along with heatsink fins for the memory/VRM.

I read a Tom's article where they placed an Accelero III cooler on a 290 to great results, but again had to buy extra heatsink fins (the 290 has 16 mem chips, the Accelero comes with 12) plus I've never messed with aftermarket heatsinks.

Short of putting this baby under water, what are my options? Any homebrewed or DIY solutions? Does changing the thermal paste do anything at all? Thanks!

I would bet applying the correct amount of a quality thermal paste would drop the temp at least 5C, probably more? I don't think I've ever seen a manufacturer put the correct amount of thermal paste, ever.

It's pretty easy to do, so it's definitely worth a shot.
