This may be a little early, but I'm planning upgrades for Star Citizen (I won't start buying anything until SC is at least in beta).

I have 3 HannsG 27" monitors (1920x1200) which I don't plan to upgrade (I think this is good enough). Pretty much everything else is on the table to change, but I want to stick w/AMD GPUs that aren't voltage locked.

I'm thinking R9 290 GPU, but with 3 monitors--the way they are marketing that game... we're probably looking at multiple GPUs. And if I do that, how many are actually going to fit on a motherboard without heat or simple space problems?

I don't want to go crazy (like over $4000), but the budget is flexible. What should I be looking at?

Uhh, all you need is a motherboard with the right chipset that supports multiple gpus (i.e. the high end ones like z87 chipset for intel currently) and make sure it has enough PCI express lanes.

You won't need more than 2 GFX cards though.

Something like this, but it will obviously need to change as new stuff will be released by the time star citizen is in beta:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i7-4820K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor ($310.98 @ Best Buy)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($89.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme6 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard ($224.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory:...

Eh, it's not Carmack's (goofy Doom & Quake) game, it's Chris Roberts (Wing Commander, Ultima)... big difference (to me).

They have 42 million dollars and still getting I think 5-10k more every day, with no set deadline or publisher morons to force an unfinished pile of crap out the door. I'm pretty sure they'll be fine. Even if they only deliver on half of what's promised.

But what I really want to know is, what does it take to put 3 (or even 4) GPUs into a PC? Will I need to build a custom case and use riser cables or anything?

It'd be a no brainer to not pick r9 290 at the 399$ price tag.
Anyways, I only changed the video card, everything else is upto you.
