I really need 16gb RAM for when i get my gaming pc for graphic video and photographic editing on heavy software like photoshop(and gaming), so I need to know when I get myh gaming pc whether to buy the 16gb straight away or buy 8gb and then buy another 8gb later (this would be more convenient money wise but it doesnt make a big difference. I would obviously be buying the same ram again, would this affect the pc, would i be able to buy two different types of ram and would it work (i am not planning on doing this but i would like to know). However I don't want any problems so I need the chance of any issues limited as much as possible and i would prefer to have some spare ram slots on my motherboard (asus maximus 6 hero(c2 version). If i do buy the 16gb should i buy it 2 sticks of 8 and have 2 slots left (what i want-but i dont know if this is a good idea or not) have 4 sticks of 4gb which i think makes it faster but uses all slots or start with the 8gb which is 2 sticks of 4 and buy the same package again to get 4 sticks of 4 gb ram? Please help I have no idea and i am building this pc from scratch so i really dont want any problems, many thanks.

you will lose performance populating 4 slots vs 2................... but you will pick up performance in video editing the more ram you have ( 8 to 16 ) regardless of how many slots are populated...depending on whether what you do really benefits from it......... sounds odd doesn't it? I would go straight for 2 8gig sticks now. you also don't have to buy super name brand high end fancy heat sink billboard ram either. none of the ram i buy anymore has them. i use value select" type ram sticks..... gskill right now until they start putting out garbage.

processor architecture (memory controller) also plays a part in this. ( how the ram is seen/utilized. )
Gaming will not get ANY performance gains from more than 8gb RAM so forget that. Base this upgrade on Video editing alone.

You can get 8gb now (probably plenty for you), then add 8gb more later. Get 2x4gb kit of 8gb RAM. Then if you ACTUALLY need more, get another set of the same 2x4gb kit.
