Ok, before i start i feel it is my obligation to say that i do not. NOT. want any fanboism on this thread for either side. But anyway let me present you with my dilemma.
at current i am planning to build the following system at the end of June:

4790K I7 CPU
H100I COOLER
ROG HERO VII Z97 ATX BOARD
128GB SAMSUNG PRO SSD
2 X 3TB SEAGATE 7200RPM 64MB CACHE HDD'S
16GB OF CORSAIR VENGEANCE 1600MHZ RAM
SWITCH 810 BLACK NZXT FULL TOWER CASE
CORSAIR RM1000 WATT PSU

now, here is my dilemma, i could choose to go with gtx 780 sli which would bring me to around £1800 total (without Cpu)
or go with r9 290 (direct cu2) which would bring me to around just under £1700.
i realise that power consumption of AMD route may be 50 - 150 watts more, but from benchmarks i see that the r9 290 is almost, in many situations neck and neck if not ahead of the 780.
also if i go with 290 option i may be able to opt for 32gb of vengeance ram to fill gab or even another SSD, thought and recommendations?

Solution
I believe two 290s would outperform two 780s in situations where such graphic power is needed. They are also cheaper. I recommend the Sapphire Tri-X 290. I can't imagine 32GB RAM ever being necessary.

The 290s are the cheaper path for sure if money is an issue.

In terms of actually performance that is noticeable, currently it would be hard to tell the difference in most applications and games between the two setups.

Personally I would go for the 780 sli over the 290 simply for the better driver support the company offers.

(As I've been told nvidia has better customer service as well but I can't say myself.)

hmmm yeah, tbh it would seem that the option to save myself some cash to fund other areas of the PC seems like a good and reasonable option. Think it will be the 290's then. From my knowledge also, AMD drivers have not been too bad over the last 6months compared to Nvidia's which is suprising so i think i'll chance, and yeah, can't ever see 32gb of RAM being needed so prehaps braided cable pack and cathodes for looks?
