Not sure this is in the right place (systems) but I entered this question before I registered and it went there by default, I think.

Have XP pro going to Windows 7 64bit, MB is P5N-E SLI, 500W PS.

Am having trouble using an external drive to back up (1920 error seagate dashboard.)

Wasted a whole day on that then I thought:

Can I just add a new HD (1TB, already have), install W7 on that, then transfer my old files/programs off the old HD (keep as a second 1 TB HD)?

I don't want to use the "windows easy transfer" because I want all new settings (user accounts, etc).

Seems like I could return the external, and have the data on the old HD as a backup, migrate data to new HD as I feel i want?

It's sometimes possible to transfer programs, but definitely not advised to, and there's no guarantee that they'd work at all.

You could even create a partition on your existing HDD if it's big enough, then install W7 on your new partition, then move the data over and consolidate it back to one partition.

Great, thanks, now I need to research how to set up a dual boot.

Do I just put the old HD in the second slot, attach cable with the second plug, put the new HD in the first slot, attach with first plug, install W7 on it?

Found this: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2119018/set-windows-dual-boot.html
Couldn't be that easy, right?
